The San Francisco 49ers may have had higher hopes for themselves, but their fans knew that in Chip Kelly’s first season as head coach there might be something of an adjustment period. The Arizona Cardinals certainly did not think that they would be tied with the Niners at the moment with a 1-3 record after four games. But not only are they, but they have to go to the reinforcements at the most important position as they embark on the Thursday night football game, which begins at 8:25 PM ET at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. This game is being televised by CBS, and that gives BetAnySports customers the opportunity to watch the proceedings and stay involved in the action as they place wagers in real time with the help of Live Betting Ultra.
Carson Palmer has been sacked twelve times, and on one of those last week in a loss to the L.A. Rams he was pounded to the turf hard enough to suffer a concussion. He had to be replaced by Drew Stanton, his long-time backup, and Stanton did not exactly bring life to the offense, going four for 11 with two interceptions. Now Stanton is in the starting role, as Palmer can’t recover in time. Can the Arizona offense operate efficiently with him at the controls?
The Niners looked for a moment like they might be a factor, as they imposed their defensive will on the Rams on the opening Monday night to the tune of 28-0. But they faltered since, with road losses at Carolina and Seattle, and more significantly, a home loss to the Dallas Cowboys, where rookie running back Ezekiel Elliott ran around, over and through them for 138 yards. And of course, Blaine Gabbert at quarterback is not going to provide a long-term answer for Kelly.
Here are your football betting lines at BetAnySports for this Thursday matchup, where, as you can see, the Cards are laying points on the road:
Arizona Cardinals -3.5 (+100)
San Francisco 49ers +3.5 (-120)
Over 42 points -110
Under 42 points -110
So people do not respect what San Francisco can do. And why should they? After the 28-0 blanking of the Los Angeles Rams in the season opener, they have allowed the last three teams to average 165 yards on the ground. And that may play right into the hands of what Arizona wants to do, because we imagine the less they have to rely on the arm of Stanton, the better. And you could do a lot worse than have David Johnson (4.7 ypc) in the backfield.
Last week the Niners could not make a rookie crack, so it is not likely that they will make a veteran – even one with limited ability – fold under pressure. Of course, they don’t bring a terrific amount of pressure in the first place. But what is interesting about the 49ers is that they have done a nice job of keeping Gabbert’s uniform clean, allowing him to be sacked just three times in these four games.
But as BetAnySports patrons know, you have to produce. That’s where this guy has come up short. He is 58% accurate, with a 4-4 ratio of touchdown passes to interceptions, and that doesn’t bring anyone to their knees. The Niners are the fastest team when it comes to going from one play to another, at 24.5 seconds, but they just don’t move the ball very well, averaging 24 yards per drive. And they have gone three-and-out 34% of the time; only the Rams are worse in that category.
There have been some calls to give Colin Kaepernick a chance, and perhaps Kelly will pull the trigger on that before long. Reportedly his teammates really want it to happen, and you have to wonder whether that has led to a heightened degree of dissatisfaction with Gabbert. Remember, however, that Kaepernick was intercepted four times last year in a 47-7 loss to the Cardinals, and that eventually led to him losing his starting job.
